AA Rosette country house hotel on the shores of Lake Windermere

Dining

The hotel holds two AA Rosettes for culinary excellence, with an extensive menu that showcases regional produce such as Cumberland sausage, locally caught trout, and Cumbrian cheeses. Guests choosing the Gourmet package receive a four-course dinner with an amuse-bouche and coffee with chocolate truffles. The bar menu offers toasted sandwiches and snacks, while the restaurant also serves a special diet menu upon request.

Rooms & Grounds

Cragwood Country House Hotel sits on 20 acres of landscaped gardens with a private jetty giving direct access to Lake Windermere. Ground-floor rooms open onto a patio with pond views, while lake-view rooms from the first floor have bay window seats overlooking the grounds. Each guest room includes a flat-screen TV, tea and coffee facilities, bottled water, and a jar of sweets.

Pet-Friendly

Dogs receive a welcome pack containing a ball, poop bags, and calming treats to help them settle. The hotel provides pet bowls, a dog mat, and a drinking bowl for each canine guest. Ground-floor rooms with direct outdoor access are available for guests traveling with dogs.

Weddings & Events

The hotel offers customizable wedding packages for both intimate elopements and larger celebrations with up to 20 guests. Couples can add a private boat trip on Windermere with canapés and drinks as part of their wedding. The wedding coordinators provide personal planning support and decorate the reception areas to match each couple's vision.

Location

Cragwood lies 5 minutes' drive from Windermere centre, with attractions such as Lakes Aquarium at Newby Bridge, Windermere Steamboat Museum, and the World of Beatrix Potter nearby. The hotel's private grounds include a short woodland walk down to the lake shore, where guests can watch the ferry and other vessels. The hotel is accessible by car via a tree-lined drive and offers free on-site parking.

“Cragwood Country House Hotel strikes me as the sort of place where afternoon tea lingers into evening cocktails. Its lakeside setting and gardens promise a tranquil escape, even with a dog in tow. While some service hiccups seem to occur, the commitment to local sourcing and those AA Rosettes suggest dining is a genuine highlight.”

constant noise thin walls
Room 10 must be avoided. It faced the small parking area and overlooked the kitchen. I heard all the kitchen staff, doors banging, even the sounds of food preparation. Noise upstairs woke me up at 3 a.m. and again around 6 a.m.

frozen chips black pudding
The breakfast menu had good quality food.
I was disappointed. The steak I ordered was almost £30, so I did not expect frozen chips. The half slice of black pudding felt cheap. I also asked for no beans, but I did not get offered an extra mushroom or tomato.

coffee machine natural sources good mirrors dog smell sticky table poor decoration
My room had a coffee machine and a kettle. All products provided in the bathroom were from natural sources. The bathroom offered plenty of space with good mirrors.
I could smell dog in my room. The table in the restaurant was sticky. I thought that the decoration needed a good clean.
